Is your Windows computer one of the many that are running slower each time you start it up or shut it down? Are your programs opening slowly or does your browser take an inordinate length of time to bring up pages?

There are a number of solutions to these problems.

First Things First

Before trying the solutions below, you should try the diagnostics and repair utilities that come with Windows. In all likelihood you will be asked to run them by any support technician you talk to.

1. Either through the internet options in the control panel or under the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, delete all browsing history and cookies.

2. Under Accessories in the programs menu go to System Tools and run Disk Clean Up.

3. Under Accessories/System Tools, run Disk Defragmenter on each of the hard drives in your system.

4. Under My Computer go to the hard drive and right click and select properties. Go to the tools tab and then error checking. Select both options. If your disk is formatted under NTFS (as most are) the program will ask you if you want to schedule a check on the next startup. Click yes and restart your computer. Restart your computer and sit back and relax. This will take a bit of time depending on the size of your disk. Repeat this process for each of your hard disks.

Registry

After performing all of the above, you find that the computer is still running slower then you expect, it is time to consider the Windows Registry. You probably have all the prerequisite Firewall, Antivirus, Spyware and Adware programs installed, so the next likely culprit is the Windows Registry. As you download and/or install software the Windows Registry is managed to tell the system how to manage the software. Then when you uninstall software the Windows Registry is again managed to remove any changes made. Unfortunately, this is not always managed correctly and the Widows Registry deteriorates. Fortunately, there are tools available today to correct a corrupted or bloated Windows Registry. Technical Support

All of the major hardware manufactures offer technical support options which are usually free within an initial period of time. The technical support usually comes in several levels of support (experience and knowledge) and you may have to go through some of these levels before you find a solution. They may charge for these services later in the life of the hardware, about the time you may begin experiencing a slow down. Wait times for this “free” support can be excessive and the technician should take you through the steps outlined above. If you have performed these steps ahead of time, you can speed up the process significantly.

Repair Facilities

If all else fails, then your system may be having hardware problems and you will have to have a competent repair facility go through your system. Most of the computer manufactures offer this service for a fee if the computer is outside of warranty. Today, a number of retailers (Best Buy, Staples, etc) are offering this service onsite and on location. But beware, they are not cheap. However, if you have tried all the solutions above and the performance of your system is still not up to par, this may be the only choice you have.
