How Should I Network My Laptop With My Two Existing Networked Desktop Computers?
I have two desktop computers networked and sharing internet together with router and ethernet cable. I went this way as they had previously been networked wirelessly, but this was very unreliable and down often. Anyway, the two now networked together flawlessly, no problems. I just purchased a Dell laptop with built in wireless card and a Linksys router. Any suggestions how to connect my three units together without taking out the ethernet cable system I already have in place?? Thanks! Bob

If your router only has two ethernet ports then you will have to network the laptop wirelessly.

You can simply purchase a wireless router and connect the wireless router to the existing router that you have with an Ethernet cable. The laptop can then communicate with the wireless router and through the wired router to the internet connection or with your other wired PCs.
An alternative is to purchase a wireless router with DSL/Cable features with
ports for wired-cable connections. This will give you the ability to connect your desktops through a wired network while at the same time, provide connection for wireless devices.
I personally had the first set up but when the equipment got old and outdated, I switched to a wireless DSL router where I hooked up my 3 desktops and 2 laptops to the same internal network.
The second option would cost less overall with very little changes to your existing network, since it really works as your current network setup plus now you have wireless availability also.
Without knowing how ur network is designed this question cannot be answered. but assuming that you are using a router to hook up the 2 desktops, then all you do is repleace the router with a router with wireless and wired capabilities.
unless you are doing something special this is how 99 percent of the home networks are
1 phone jack to modem
2 modem to wan port on router
3 router to pc
4 router to pc
5 router to laptop wirelessly
here is an easier way of saying it.
unplug the network wire from the modem and plug it into the router, then plug a new wire from the modem to the wan port on router.
keep router away from electrical and other devices such as fridges.
point antennas up.
if u get bad signal. move router higher, the higher the router, the further the range will go. just a couple feet can make a world of difference.
still havin problems, buy a directional antenna, or google “pringles can wifi antenna”

Do you have any idea why your wireless was not reliable? The current Wireless 80211G is 54mb and very reliable.
I have two PC’s I connect directly to a wireless router and a laptop, that I normally connect via the built in wireless card; but can also connect with a network cable to the router. It’s very simple and works great.
If your laptop has a pc port you can purchase an ethernet card …..it fits into the port and has the ethernet connector to allow you to access the network by ethernet! They run around $35.00 and up!
Try putting it all on a switch.
