Can A Laptop With No Network Adapter Be Connected To The Internet?

Submitted by admin on October 1, 2009 – 11:35 am14 Comments

I’m thinking of buying a cheap ~$15 laptop in an old computer auction but it doesn’t have a Network Adapter. Does this mean no internet? Is there any way to get around this to make it internet capable?

    Yes
You can use the modem if it has one or buy an external modem to connect to the serial port. If you want to use broadband then you need to have a USB port and buy a USB to Ethernet adapter or a WiFi USB adapter (if you have wireless access).

  • TARFU says:

if the laptop has card slots you can by an adapter or if it has usb you can get a usb adapter, but you will have to make sure that the laptops is compatable.

  • Eric D says:

Modem card (see if your laptop has a PCMCIA slot)

  • Joe D says:

    Sure, by using a modem.

  • jlacroix says:

There are USB network devices . .
Also, you could use your Serial port
If you have a PCMCIA slot, you could use that as well
Options are available to you, just get creative.

    Dialup?

  • Michael B says:

yes by dial up if you have a modem

  • ryan484l says:

    no

    no dsl or cable

    MAybe wireless, rite?

  • Genio Atrapado says:

Sorry but the adapter is the one that enables you to use external modems or internal cards in order to conect to the internet. If you dont install it, it means no internet.

  • Apollo says:

U need to insert a Lan Card or Setup a wireless Lan with a computer with internet and u can access by giving ip of that computer as default gateway.

  • Anish says:

Look fo a phone jack. In case you have one, the computer has a dialup modem. Another possibility is a USB wireless or ethernet adapter, in case the computer has USB ports.

  • morganna says:

you need a network adapter to connect to the internet.
If the laptop is $15, its not going to run anything on the internet properly. Its probably an old pentium machine that is going to be a piece of junk.
